Children of tea workers get scholarships

The Bangladesh Tea Board has provided ‘Education Scholarship 2020’ of around Tk 10.50 lakh to 1,803 meritorious children of tea workers across the country.

Director in-charge of the Project Development Unit of BTB AKM Rafiqul Haque reveled the information on Thursday at a function to distribute scholarship cheques at Rajghat Tea Garden in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar, said a press release.

BTB has provided the scholarship to encourage children’s education and improve the learning environment, the release added.

In his speech, AKM Rafiqul Haque said the scholarships are being given since 2001.

The authorities concerned disbursed the scholarships after reviewing the 2019 test results of the children in 92 tea gardens and scholarship recipients ranged from students of Grades II to VIII, he added.

He said the scholarship cheques have already been distributed in those gardens.

With the establishment of the ‘Bangladesh Tea Garden Workers’ Education Trust’ in 2001 to develop the quality of education of the children of tea garden workers, more than 24,000 scholarships have been distributed so far.

In addition, the trust has also set up non government school buildings, latrines, flag posts, arranged training courses for teachers, and distributed educational material and sports equipment.

Project Development Unit’s assistant development officer Mohammad Moniruzzaman Akand and general manager of the Rajghat Garden AKM Mainul Ahsan, among others, were present on the occasion.
